The anaesthetists who will care for you
Essential Anaesthetic Services is a group of eleven specialist anaesthetists practising in Bendigo. Every member of our group is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) — the specialist qualification held by consultant anaesthetists in Australia — and participates in the College's continuing professional development program.
Why surgeons in Central Victoria work with us
The group was formed in 2013, when surgeons across several specialties in Central Victoria wanted something specific: a consistent operating team — the same surgeon, the same anaesthetist, the same nursing staff, working together regularly. That consistency is still how we work. Today our anaesthetists support more than twenty surgeons across the region, in specialties from orthopaedics and ophthalmology to obstetrics, paediatrics and dental surgery, and provide after-hours cover for emergency procedures and the labour ward.
All of our anaesthetists are involved in teaching the next generation of specialists, providing anaesthetic education to doctors in training.

What FANZCA means for you
Becoming a specialist anaesthetist in Australia takes a minimum of around thirteen years: a medical degree, at least two years working as a hospital doctor, then a five-year specialist training program with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, covering anaesthesia, pain medicine, resuscitation and the care of patients before, during and after surgery. The letters FANZCA after your anaesthetist's name mean they have completed all of it — and continue to meet the College's ongoing professional standards every year. You can read more about what an anaesthetist does, or how anaesthetic fees work.
